Crbnly Conversations

How to Find Crbnly Joy

CRBNLY Season 1 Episode 64

On today's Crbnly Conversations, the hosts turn over the episode to Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and her TED Talk "How to Find Joy in Climate Action". In this talk, she suggests drawing a Venn diagram to map these questions: What are you good at? What is the work that needs doing? And what brings you joy? Where your answers intersect is where you should put your climate action effort. Take a watch and tell us that brings you Crbnly Joy?

Chadwick (01:57.238)
Yeah, thanks Shane for that and hopefully, well, we were chatting before so I know you had a pretty nice Thanksgiving Day yourself. So I'm glad to hear that. Mine was actually involved right into Herald Square by the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. So I got a whole new perspective on Thanksgiving yesterday, on Thursday. So good times. And here we go. So, Shane, you and I were talking just earlier and we're like...

Shane (02:07.401)
Thank you.

Chadwick (02:25.794)
There's this really great TED Talk by Ayanna Elizabeth Johnson.

How to find joy in climate action? I know we kind of dig in and carbon the conversations like the costs the expenses the impacts of climate change and also all the things that we can do in this video really resonated with me I think it resonated with you So we wanted to bring some of this video to our listeners Talk about it and then really like get out of this conversation quickly So all of our listeners can pivot to this TED talk themselves and hear I on a speak

Shane (02:44.437)
Yep.

Chadwick (03:00.941)
much more clearly about a topic she's been researching and doing something about than we have.

Shane (03:06.717)
Yep. So...

Chadwick (04:16.962)
As Shane gets that video down.

Chadwick (04:21.822)
What I really like in that first minute is like, what's that one easy, simple thing to do? And when I think about you and me and our friend Steven and our other friends like journey to like what the carbon like conversation is, we wanted to recognize a lot of things that we're already doing, especially anyone that's lower income, that's been like struggling like to make ends meet and all the different cost saving things that are also happen to be sustainable, right? Like thrifting, recycling,

Shane (04:27.583)
Yeah.

Shane (04:38.142)
Yeah.

Chadwick (04:51.956)
using just finding the best alternative that's not brand new and impacting the environment.

Shane (05:00.933)
Mm-hmm.

Chadwick (05:01.534)
And what really resonated is like, we can't just do one thing and we fixed it. And that's why we think of crbnly and the carbon in the station as like a lifestyle, right? What is like, how do we string together stuff that we're already doing and add to that through the knowledge that we're gaining through these conversations. That to me like just really sticks out as like, okay, how do we do this positively and how do we actually change the mindsets of ourselves and others? So larger action, climate change action can happen.

Shane (05:05.567)
Right.

Shane (05:25.927)
Mm-hmm.

Shane (05:30.425)
Exactly. I agree. I mean, yes, there are things that affect climate change more than others. But let's just use like fossil fuels, for example. The average person, like we've said in many podcasts, the average person doesn't have money to go and buy an electric vehicle. You know.

You can go, there's some things that you can go and vote on that every now and then might have some sort of, you know, hand in trying to change the dependency of fossil fuels, we'll say that, especially that we have in this country, but really across the world. But you can do small steps towards that, that are more obtainable for the average person, like driving your car less, maybe if.

You know, if you're going to a store nearby, walking or riding a bike, things like that. I think that, I think that being part of the change is more realistic and you feel more connected to it when it's things that you know that you have access to do. You know, so it's like, and that, I love the quote, I wish we used it more, but I know, I think we used it on the first episode, it's like.

Chadwick (06:30.166)
Mm-hmm.

Chadwick (06:44.556)
Yeah.

Shane (06:54.549)
do what you can with where you're at, with what you've got. And I think that really defines kind of what she's speaking about a little bit. But yeah, definitely highly recommend this, recommend everyone to take 10 minutes out of their day to watch this TED Talk.

Chadwick (06:58.958)
Mm-hmm.

Chadwick (07:18.154)
Yeah. Do you think we have a little bit more time to watch the next minute where she talks about the Venn diagram?

Shane (07:21.641)
Yeah. Yep, let's see here.

Chadwick (07:26.132)
Let's spread some of that carbonly joy.

Shane (08:23.022)
Of course.

Chadwick (08:25.358)
We'll edit this out.

Shane (08:28.033)
I'm going to go to bed.

Shane (08:45.813)
There you have it.

Chadwick (08:47.341)
Yeah.

Shane (08:48.873)
That, I mean, even that resonates even more. And I'll be, you know, I'll be honest. Like I'm still trying to find what my exact special, well, I think I'm trying to find my special talent to be more effective. But I think that this podcast has been part of that. I think that my work with Franklin's and Farms, like that just started out as.

me just wanting to volunteer to like be part of the community. But now it's really led into being passionate about like food sovereignty, which time, you know, ties into climate action because you're not relying on these big stores, you know, to, to purchase, you know, certain foods anymore and things like that. Um, so I think I'm slowly

Chadwick (09:31.615)
Mm-hmm.

Shane (09:44.709)
working my way closer to finding what my special talent is to even take that next step and like be more involved in climate action.

Chadwick (09:57.162)
Yeah, I mean, you've really got me wordless, loss of words, because her instructions, your own journey, like for me, I like.

I love to do things, but I also like to teach others and help inform. And I feel like that's my like superpower, climate superpower. But what lift is that doing? Like I just have to believe, right. And maybe that's my real climate super this. I actually believe and I'm hopeful because there are differences being made and changes being made and, and if us, the masses of consumers don't actually want them or think about them or know about that, the options.

Shane (10:27.262)
Yeah.

Chadwick (10:44.726)
Like these larger initiatives just don't stand a chance, right? And we could go down that rabbit hole of what it used to be like and where it is today and see that difference, but it doesn't mean like things are getting, the climate is fixing itself yet. Like we still are struggling to get below that less than two degrees Celsius global temperature raises and the impacts of that. So.

Shane (10:48.511)
Yeah.

Shane (11:01.711)
Mm-hmm.

Chadwick (11:09.482)
I think this TED Talk is just brilliantly positioned. It helps you get motivated and figure out what your reaction can be. So I'm with you, Shane. I think all of our listeners should send this to a friend, connect that back to what they're already doing, and then see what else they can do day by day to make that happen.

Shane (11:19.989)
Yeah.

Shane (11:32.509)
Yeah, yeah. Whenever you share this and if Ted talks, aren't your things and you want to see, you know, two handsome guys talk about climate action, tune into crbnly Conversations. We, you know, we in a way are giving solution ideas with each episode almost.

Chadwick (11:54.038)
Oh yeah, we'll help you fill in your Venn diagrams. And as she's shared, Miss Johnson shared that, like if you're not passionate about it, then don't do it. Go find the thing that you're passionate about because there's plenty of work to be done. So there's definitely something that you're passionate about.

Shane (11:56.84)
Yeah.

Shane (12:06.25)
Yep.

Shane (12:12.869)
Exactly. And she check out the Ted Talk because I mean, she speaks about way more other things than what we've discussed just in this short conversation. You know, we would love to just sit here and play the full 10 minute Ted Talk for you, but that'd be illegal. So check it out. And then, you know,

Send us a message, comment on our Instagram post, something like that. Let us know what you think, what your takeaways were from it. And, you know, we hope everyone enjoys it.

Chadwick (12:48.086)
Well, I hope you have a great rest of your weekend, Shane, and all of our listeners have a great crbnly week.

Shane (12:54.837)
Same to you. Thank you.
